It wasnât late, so I decided to go home after changing back into my regular clothes. Saya argued like a good hostess, but I had the excellent excuse of preparing for Yule aboard The Odyssey with Crow the next day.
âI havenât even gotten him a gift.â
âI understand.â Saya nodded. âI can have the car stop at Newbury Street in Boston if youâd like.â
âThatâs a little rich for Crowâs blood.â
âThe Wharf in Salem, then.â
âI was going to bring him some candy from The Olde Pepper Company. Itâs his favorite.â
âAs you wish.â
âThanks, Saya.â
âIâll see you at New Yearâs, hopefully.â
âYeah.â I nodded.
I listened to music and read a free astrology ebook on the ride back up. There wasnât a word in it about Cetus as Iâd hoped, though. I hadnât asked Hertha about missing dragon eggs at all, either. The wedding itself had taken up all my bandwidth.
Maybe it was just as well. Angering Hertha might be bad for my school, which I hadnât realized was in danger of closing without her grants. Once back in my room, I used the hacked messaging function on my tablet to drop a reminder to Cosmo about it.
He left it on read, but that was typical behavior from him so I tried not to worry. I left my duffel bag on the bed and headed out with only my satchel.
My first stop was Essex Street. Finding the door to the Hawthorn campus was easier than I expected. Usually, shifters had a harder time sensing it than magi. But I was the Sirin, with a faerie rank too. Maybe that explained it.
Faith hadnât been specifically expecting me, but I saw her in the café after taking only a handful of paces into the lobby. She brought her latte along before leading me to the nurseâs office.
I was surprised to find the DJ working there. His name badge said Ezekiel Brown, and he helped Faith jab my arm to draw some blood.
âIâll take this back down to Providence with me and send it to the doctors in charge of the typing trials,â she said. âThanks, Mavis.â
âItâs only a little blood, no problem.â I grinned.
After that, I went to the candy store and got myself a Spooky Pumpkin Pop. They had Crowâs favorite blackjacks and lemon Gibralters so I got him a bag of each.
I thought nothing would top last yearâs gift. My brother once again proved me wrong.
âThis is the best.â Crow smiled down at the candy in the gift bag. âGods, youâve got no idea how badly I missed good old Salem candy.â
âIâm relieved itâs a hit.â
âNo misses detected except you. Now, open yours.â
The bundle he gave me wasnât in shiny paper, only wrapped in brown oilcloth. But when the folds of fabric fell away, I stood staring at the hand-carved item, unable to determine what it was. Its color was like one of my wing pinions but leaning more toward purple than black.
The textured carving on it was a featherâs too, but only at the business end.
